Visiting Hurghada, Cairo, and Luxor with a family member who has a disability or limited mobility is entirely possible and can be a lot of fun, although it requires careful planning that takes into account the specific characteristics of each of these cities.
Hurghada is well-suited for guests with limited mobility. The vast majority of modern beach resorts and coastal hotels are equipped with ramps, paved walkways, and level, step-free access to pools and beaches. As for boat trips, standard public vessels are generally not equipped with special ramps for wheelchairs; however, local crews are well-trained in how to safely assist guests in boarding. For maximum comfort, we strongly recommend choosing private yachts or specialized speedboat tours.
Cairo is a vast and historic city, which means that the old streets and traditional markets may have uneven sidewalks. However, Egypt’s leading cultural attractions have undergone significant modernization. World-class attractions, such as the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), are fully wheelchair-accessible, equipped with modern elevators, smooth ramps, and dedicated pathways. Even on the Giza Pyramid Plateau, new paved paths have been laid, which has made getting around much easier and allowed visitors to explore the monuments in comfort.
Luxor is an open-air historical city with ancient structures, where the ground can sometimes be sandy or uneven. Fortunately, the massive temples on the East Bank—Karnak and Luxor—have large, level, paved open areas where wheelchairs can move without difficulty. On the West Bank, in the Valley of the Kings, excellent accessibility improvements have been implemented, including smooth, paved access roads and electric golfto transport guests from the main gates directly to the tomb entrances. (Note: Entering the burial chambers themselves usually requires navigating steps.)
Beyond the infrastructure, the greatest asset for any traveler with a disability in Egypt is the character of its people.
Deeply rooted in local culture, social values, and religious beliefs, the tradition of assisting people with disabilities is viewed as a sacred, noble, and deeply respected duty. In Egypt, people do not consider helping a guest an inconvenience; on the contrary, it is a welcome act of hospitality. Whether you’re getting into a car, entering a historic site, or navigating an obstacle, hotel staff, drivers, site security guards, and ordinary citizens will readily come to your aid with sincere warmth, respect, and a smile.
