Maalox: Medication Overview

1. Active Ingredients

Maalox is a balanced combination of two main antacids:

• Aluminium Hydroxide
• Magnesium Hydroxide (Some versions may also contain Simethicone to help relieve gas and bloating).

2. Indications for Use

It is used to treat symptoms caused by too much stomach acid, such as:

• Heartburn (Acid reflux).
• Acid Indigestion.
• Sour Stomach.
• Gastritis (Inflammation of the stomach lining).
• Peptic Ulcers (as a supportive treatment to relieve pain).

3. Mechanism of Action

Maalox works by neutralizing the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. The combination of aluminum and magnesium is designed to balance the digestive side effects, as aluminum can cause constipation while magnesium can have a laxative effect.

4. Recommended Dosage

• Suspension (Liquid): Usually 10–20 ml (often available in convenient sachets) taken 20 minutes to one hour after meals and before bedtime.
• Chewable Tablets: 1–2 tablets chewed thoroughly, followed by a glass of water, up to 4 times a day.
• Note: Do not exceed the maximum daily dose mentioned on the packaging (usually no more than 80 ml or 16 tablets in 24 hours).

5. Important Precautions & Warnings

• Drug Interactions: Like most antacids, Maalox can interfere with the absorption of other medications (especially antibiotics like Tetracycline or Ciprofloxacin). Wait at least 2 to 4 hours between Maalox and other drugs.
• Kidney Health: Patients with severe kidney disease should avoid Maalox or use it only under strict medical supervision due to the risk of magnesium or aluminum buildup in the body.
• Duration of Use: Do not use this medication for more than two weeks continuously. If symptoms persist, consult a specialized physician.
• Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe for short-term use, but it is always best to consult a doctor first.
